Memorable Maternity Care
Focus on Families to Exceed Expectations

Jeff and Kim Banks, Matthew and baby London relax in a newly decorated birthing suite at HRMC.

When Jeff and Kim Banks learned they were expecting, they included their 10-year-old son, Matthew, in the pregnancy right away. From reading books with him about pregnancy to teaching him how to hold a newborn safely, Jeff and Kim emphasized the importance of Matthew's big brother role. And the couple, who lives in De Smet, wanted to choose a hospital for delivery that supports a family-centered approach.

On June 24, when London Paige Mattison Banks was born at Huron Regional Medical Center, Kim knew that they had made the right choice. "When we checked in, it was really cute because the admissions clerk said to me, 'Here's your wristband,' and Matthew said 'Yes!' because he thought it was for him," Kim recalls. "But the clerk didn't miss a beat. She quickly made one for him that said 'Big Brother.'"

"Delivering at Huron wasn't just about the baby, it was about our whole family," Jeff agrees. "We left the hospital with our precious new daughter, and all three of us also left with memories of feeling cared for and important every step of the way."

"Unbelievably Accommodating"
The family was escorted to one of the hospital's LDRP (labor, delivery, recovery, postpartum) suites, which allow laboring moms to deliver in spacious and comfortable surroundings. "I remember everything was pleasant and calm," Kim says. "The suite was beautiful, and the nurses put us at ease. They would come in, introduce themselves and were so understanding – at a time when you really want to be made comfortable."

Even as London's birth drew near, the Banks' physician, Dr. Nathan Loewen, and the nurses continued to pay special attention to Big Brother Matthew. "They made room for him, included him and talked to him every time they came into the suite," Kim says. "They were just so unbelievably accommodating."

Nurses Who Really Care
After London's birth at HRMC, Kim says she can't help but compare it to Matthew's birth at another hospital. "That experience was totally different," Kim says. "The main difference is the nurses at HRMC are so much more personable – and you know they care about you and your family."

"The nursing staff was great," Jeff says. "After they introduced themselves, they would tell us about their families and little things about them that helped us get to know each other."

Your Choice of Flexible Options
The Banks felt well-prepared for delivery after taking prenatal education classes, which are offered bimonthly and taught by certified childbirth educators. "We covered breathing, relaxation, pain relief techniques and postpartum experiences," Kim says. "Even though this wasn't my first child, it was a good refresher for all the things
you forget."

HRMC also offers a tour for family members to learn about all the options available in the maternity department, such as whirlpool tubs. "I didn't think I would use the whirlpool, but I changed my mind during labor," Kim says. "Having our family together to meet London in such a compassionate environment was a wonderful beginning for us all.

"But the thing I liked best about delivering at HRMC was that the nursing staff and doctor were absolutely tremendous," Kim says. "It was more than I expected it to be."
